Zebra shark

Scientific Name Stegostoma fasciatum

Max. Size: 11 feet/3.35 meters, but rarely exceeds about 8 feet/2.45 meters

Tank Size: minimum 20,000 gallons

Aggression: not aggresive, usually very peaceful

Hardiness: quite hardy

Reef-Safe: Found near rocky reefs.

Physical Description

striped as juveniles, these sharks become pale yellow with black spots when mature, which is why they are also sometimes called leopard sharks.

Distribution

Western Pacific & Indian Oceans- Japan, Indonesian, Australia, India, Eastern & South Africa.

Behavior

this shark like strong water movement, and swims at all levels of the aquarium. Tends to be more active than most benthic species.

Feeding

Benthic invertebrates - Clams, snails, mussels, shrimp, & crab, also eats small benthic fishes.


Breeding

Known to be oviparous - pups hatch at about 9-10 inches.


Social Structure

usually solitary, but well form large groups during breeding season.

Additional Notes

This shark is very seldom available in the aquarium trade, but may be sold on rare occasions as juveniles. This species is also best suited for public aquariums.
