Protein Skimmer Cleaning
One of the most important maintenance tasks to the long-term health of your saltwater aquarium is the regular cleaning of the protein skimmer.
Why?
As skimmate and grime build up in the skimmer's riser tube and collection cup, the efficiency of the skimmer becomes drastically reduced. When dealing with skimmers driven by submersible pumps such as many hang-on-back protein skimmers, restrictions in water flow created by debris in the pump or tubing may also reduce the effectiveness of the skimmer (and lead to decreased pump life).
How?
Depending on the size of the skimmer, this can be a pretty dirt job. Generally speaking, the process is pretty straightforward.
- Turn off the skimmer/pump
- Drain water from hang-on-back skimmer (avoids nasty mess/wet carpet)
- Remove and clean collection cup
- Disassemble (if necessary) and clean riser tube
- Disassemble and clean pump
- Reassemble, turn back on
What Should I Use?
Recommended tools:
- A good scrub brush or toothbrush, depending on size of skimmer. Caution: Using a spouse's toothbrush is not a good idea.
- In some cases, a flexible, thin pipe-cleaning brush is necessary to get the tubing clean.
- Lots of warm water
- Vinegar-water mixture (optional)
How Often?
In general, skimmer cleaning should be done once per month. However, if you notice decreased skimmer production, a good first step is always to clean the skimmer.
Tips
- Sinks and tubs can work well, but be prepared to clean them afterward.
- Garden hoses with strong water nozzles can work great, but be prepared to wash your clothes afterward.
- Remember to dry any pump cords thoroughly before trying to use the skimmer again.
