Introduction

A common LPS in Indo-Pacific regions, yet somewhat rarer elsewhere. An excellent beginner coral due to its hardy nature, moderate lighting requirements and impression in a tank for its cost.

Some of the more vibrant varieties are confused with host anemones - even by clownfish species themselves.

Common Names

Long tentacle plate coral

Scientific Names

Heliofungia Actiniformis

Hardiness

Provided the specimen is healtly when put into the aquarium, changes of survival are good. Care is needed not to allow air bubbles to accumulate under the plate when introduced, minimise damage to the polyps which may not recover from poor handling.

Susceptible to brown jelly infection, which due to the nature of the coral being a single organism, it is unlikely to recover from. Must be removed if infected.

Flow

Medium to high flow improves gas exchange and provides for consistent lighting across the polyps.

Lighting

Medium.

Placement

Normally substrate, however will also rest upon a suitable live rock platform. Be careful to restrict movement if placed in this manner.

Feeding

Light and adequate water flow will normally be sufficient for this LPS, however will readily take small pieces of mussell meat etc. if offered.

Propagation

Not normally propagated.

Aggression

Low, however avoid placing with other corals that may damage or compete.

Availability

Readily available in the Indo-Pacific region, somewhat rarer elsewhere.

Other Issues

Brown jelly infection is the only real weakness in this LPS.
