Cryptic Filtration Zones

The idea of having a cryptic filtration area in a reef tank seems to becoming more popular. A cryptic area is a totally unlit, slow flow are separated from the main photosynthetic display area. In this cryptic area filter feeding sponges, squirts and tunicates will prosper. These creatures live off small particulate matter and dissolved organics (waste produced by display stock).

The idea of this method of filtration is that it simulates the reef ecosystem in a more complete way, the display section only simulates the shallow area of a reef where sunlight reaches. Under this area is a vast array of caves formed by rock, all unreached by sunlight and shielded from any current.
