Reef Invertebrates
While anything without a backbone is an invertebrate, common language in the hobby would dictate that "Inverts" or invertebrates as a generalization refers to a group consisting of several types of 'Mobile invertebrates (thus disqualifying many corals, sponges, forameniferans, etc.) This is later characterization is incorrect scientifically, and we as hobbyists should try to be more scientifically accurate in our descriptions. Inverts include many Phyla, including Cnidarians (corals, anemones, jellys), Molluscs, Crustaceans, Porifera (Sponges), and many others.
Popular Uses
The mobile invertebrates are commonly used as a reef aquarium's "Clean-Up Crew" - A set of detritivores that should keep the substrate, glass and rocks clean of debris and detritus.
See category:Clean-Up Crew for more on this subject.

General Invertebrate Care
Mobile invertebrates are more sensitive to changes in water parameters such as pH, salinity, and temperature than fish and most corals. Therefore, extra care needs to be taken when acclimating these animals. Often, an acclimation period of three hours or more is recommended.
The effects of improper acclimation may not be immediately noticeable, but can drastically shorten the lifespan of your invertebrates.
